« on: June 21, 2016, 02:35:36 AM »
hey fam xx my orgo lab teacher doesn't teach us anything and i really need help passing this lab :) any help would be appreciated!

A mixture of ethyl Iodide (bp 72.3) and water boils at 63.7 degree Celsius. what weight of ethyl iodide would be carried over by 1 g of steam during steam distillation?

the condensate from a steam distillation contains 8 g of an unknown compound and 18 g of water. the mixture steam distilled at 98°C. What is the molecular weight of the unknown?

The laboratory steam distillation is not an equilibrium process. Any calculations assuming the equlibrium will be very crude.
Look at you chemical engineering calculation textbook.

AWK is right, but for your purposes you can use Dalton's Law, your organic lab teacher should accept that.

This is a partial pressures problem. Look up the partial pressure of water at the indicated temperature. The remainder is the partial pressure of the organic. Total = Pp1 + Pp2. Etc.
