Benzoic Acid reaction help
« on: June 29, 2016, 05:05:01 PM »
Hello I need help with this reaction I was given on my study guide, my teacher said no esterification of alcohols are on the test but this seems like one....

I would think the benzoic acid would react with the methanol causing a methyl benzoate to form, but what would the H+ do ? or is the H+ just to catalyze the reaction

Yes, it's known as Fischer esterification.
