Calcium Hypochlorite
« on: July 27, 2016, 04:19:41 AM »
Hi I am investigating an issue with Calcium Hypochlorite (chlorine tablets) that had a significant reaction and caught fire. A sample was sent to a reputable laboratory and the results do not mean much to me but the Lab results were..
Chloride  10 mg/kg
Calcium   50 mg/kg
My question is does this seem like a normal ratio of chemicals and if it is not what would the imbalance cause in the way of adding moisture as the issue happened after a significant storm event and high moisture in the atmosphere. The dosing machine the chemical was being dosed out of caught on fire following the popping and reaction of this tablet form Chlorine , so I am keen to try and identify what may have caused the reaction.
Thanks in advance Calaid

Commercial calcium hypochlorite usually contains 20-35 % of Cl and 5-8 % Ca. This may cause fire with organic compounds, eg with grease.
