The reagents used are H2SO4, HNO3 and KBr.

I'm wondering what the exact reaction pathway is, it seems to be a mixture of bromonation and nitration but HNO3 reacts with KBr to make Br2 aswell... (I have no idea). Please help  :P

My guess: monobromination, hydrolysis to alcohol, oxidation with HNO3 to dione.
