Chemical and physical matter
« on: September 19, 2016, 04:36:09 PM »
Hello,
I am having a hard time to solve the following problems.

Describe how you would separate a mixture of cotunnite and table salt and recover the two substances.

Could you separate a mixture of cotunnite and milk of magnesia using only cold water? Why or why not?

Substance - (dissolves) in cold water -  (dissolves) in hot water
Cotunnite      No                                     Yes
Milk of magnesia            No                      No
Table salt                       Yes                     Yes

A. You would put the mixture in cold water and the salt would dissolve. Then run the mixture through a filter and the salt will be on the filtered mixture. Cotunnite will be on the filter.
B. No because they both dissolve in cold water.

Comment for A " and recover the two substances"
Now you have solution of salt, not recovered salt.
Comment for B. Formally OK, but both substances show very different specific density. In some cases it may be used for their separation.
