Halogen Oxoacids and their salts
« on: October 20, 2016, 02:09:55 AM »
Which of the hydrates of periodic acid is prepared based on the procedure given. This is a redox process so outline the half-reactions that will be occurring and give the overall reaction and the reaction between the hydrated salt and nitric acid.

Procedure:
Mix 4g of potassium hydroxide and 2.5g of potassium iodate in 50ml of water. Heat the solution to boiling and add 3.5g of potassium persulfate in small portions.

Heat and cool in an icebath and filtrate the crystals with 6 M nitric acid

My attempt:
So far I have come up with the equation
KIO3 + K2S2O8 + 2KOH -----> KIO4 + 2K2SO4 + H20
however I do not know how to begin making it into the two half reactions/redox reactions or if this is even the right equation. As for the salt I have the equation
KIO4 + HNO3 -----> H5I06 + KNO3

Any help is appreciated.

Seperate it like this

IO3- + 2 OH- => IO4- + H2O + 2 e-

S2O82- + 2 e- => 2 SO42-

KIO4 + HNO3 +  2 H2O => KNO3 + H5IO6
