Problem-Based Experiment

Hi there.

Supposing I had a sample containing a mixture of approximately 2 g of NaNO3 and Ca(NO3)2·4H2O, what experimental methods could I use to determine the weight of the two components present in the sample? I believe I could use EDTA to complex the Ca2+ ion. What else could I do?

Have you thought about the various properties of the chemicals that might allow for separation.

Hi there.

Thanks for your reply. I wish I could use separation, but we have been limited to titration only. I was just wondering if there were any more efficient ways of titrating other than EDTA.

I there any way to separate these two compounds? They're both very soluble in water.

Just using wikipedia.org I see differences between the items you mention that could be used for separation.

There are probably many sources that give differences between them
are you allowed to use other solvents or heat them or ...

If substances given are all that is present determining Ca2+ will already tell you the mixture composition.
