Storage of diethyl ether in glass flask
« on: December 08, 2016, 02:15:33 PM »
I want to store solvents for household uses (i.e extraction of essential oils) in glass flasks like this

I'm afraid that if I store diethyl ether it would eventually generate peroxides that can provoke an accident. It is safe to store it in this type of flasks? I've covered it with aluminium foil to prevent photodegradation. Just in case.

PS: It is sealed with Parafilm

SOP for ether storage is to test for peroxides every 6 months.  If you are worried about degradation you could test it more often.
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.

Commercial ether is stabilized with BHT and ethanol to prevent oxidation but keep it in darkness.

Subro, pick up some peroxide test strips.

Brown glass would be better, but if you're keeping it in the dark it will probably be OK (especially if it has added stabilisers).

Thank you for answering me. If commercial ether has stabilizers, it won't be a problem. I'll kept in darkness, inside a box and covered with aluminium foil.

Bottles for hydrogen peroxide are usually dark and, in the countries I know, can be found at the drugstore.

Your quoted comment is specifically relevant ... how, exactly?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Buy such empty bottles meant for hydrogen peroxide to store the diethyl ether at dark.

I never seen black bottles of perhydrol in my lab. 1 Liter polyethylene bottle of 30 % H2O2 used  are always white (though in Google graphics I see them also black and deep blue). May be color of bottle contains additional information?
