Molar Absorptivity of Cobalt (II) Acetate at 530 nm
« on: December 25, 2016, 06:20:29 PM »
Currently doing an experiment that requires the use of Beer's Law, yet I don't have the resources necessary at the moment to derive the molar absorptivity for cobalt (II) acetate at 530 nm. Can anybody help me out?

Calculating extinction coefficient is a very complicated task, way beyond Undergraduate chemistry.  Usually, its given to you, or you can look it up in a reference, or you're called upon to determine it experimentally.  Maybe you can be more specific about what your assignment provides and expects.

In my experiment, I was given cobalt (II)  acetate with an unknown molarity and I'm supposed to determine its molarity. I used a spectrometer to find out the absorance of the solution with the unknown molarity, and I just assumed I could find the coefficient online somewhere and thus use Beer's Law to calculate it pretty easily. I could not find it anywhere, and I realized I should have experimentally determined the extinction coefficient (that's what I meant by "derive" in my last post) and it's too late to do that now.

I appreciate the reply, hope that clarifies some things

In case (I'm not sure) the cobalt (II) is the light-absorbing species, maybe you can find data for it, of for some other cobalt (II) salt?

After a lot of digging, I found some data for a different salt with cobalt (II) (it is the light absorbing species). Thanks for the help
