How to detect oxidized aluminum

We have made a molding compound with alumina (90% or higher) and epoxy. There are several dots which are suspected to be partially oxidized aluminum.
Just wondering there is any measurement or analysis instrument for detecting partially oxidized aluminum?

OK. A couple of points.  Aluminum exposed to the atmosphere has a thin coating of aluminum oxide on the surface.  So how is this different from the black spots you are seeing? Valence?

Edx was suggested as a way of detecting what the black spots are.  I think edx is a shortening of edxrf.  Edxrf doesn't deal with the outer valence electrons, only with electrons closer to the nucleus.  So it couldn't see the difference.

Is this correct?

Edxrf might be good for detecting other elements, say chlorine.  It could be helpful in that regard. 

Many edxrf will not go below sodium in atomic number. Although there are other related techniques.
