KOH vs Ca(OH)2
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:57:11 AM »
Was wondering the difference between Hydroxide and Oxide?

Like in the case of Calcium Hydroxide(slaked lime) vs Caclium Oxide?

or Potassium Hydroxide and Potassium Oxide?

Also why is Potassium Hydroxide caustic and nasty, yet Calcium Hydroxide doesn't seem so? ..both being a strong base?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Compare solubilities in water for both hydroxides.

Calcium oxide: CaO. Hydroxide: Ca(OH)2.
And while as brutal, calcium hydroxide isn't benign neither.

Thank you for your posts. I appreciate the information.

I should compare a hydroxide and an oxide's solubility in water? or KOH vs Ca(OH)2?

Both oxides react with water (much heat is evolved). So compare only solubility of hydroxides. The first hydroxide is about 300 times more soluble then the second one.
