Name the compound
« on: February 11, 2017, 08:47:00 AM »
Hi all...first post, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong spot.
I'm a graduate student, but chemistry is not my strength.
I have to name a compound with the following properties:

7 carbon chain
Cl on second C
ethyl group on fourth C
methy group on fifth C
and a double bonded O on third C

I've gotten to 4-ethyl 5-methyl 3 heptanone--and that seems to be an actual compound (according to Google)
But when I try to add 2 chloro- to the name, it doesn't seem to be an actual compound. Maybe I'm grouping things incorrectly?
For context, I suspect it may be an environmental contaminant, as this is for a subsurface remediation class.

Any help naming the compound or helping me understand where I went wrong would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Something like that?

CC(Cl)C(=O)C(CC)C(C)CC

Why do you expect the name to be googlable? There is an infinite number of compounds, assuming every one of them is present on the web is a bit optimistic.

Halogen substituent does not change numbering in correctly named ketone.

This compund can be found through Google but with wrong name!

Correct IUPAC name ends with ....methylheptan-3-one

Borek-- Yes, like that.
And maybe it was optimistic, but I'm working with environmental contaminates, not practice formulas, so I thought it would at least be known to the EPA or something. Thanks for replying.

AWK-- Thanks.
