I'm an electronics engineer, not a chemist. I'm translating a French chemistry based patent into English. Reference is made to hydrocarbon compounds, or example:

un composé hydrocarboné en C2 à C10, de préférence en C2-C8

Is this written in English as, ' ... a hydrocarbon compound from C2 to C10, preferably from C2 to C8... '

or something like, ' ... a C2-C10 hydrocarbon compound, preferably C2-C8...  '

Any help thankfully received.

The meaning is correctly translated. I just can't tell what English-language chemists and patent clerks would prefer.

Though I hesitate about "hydrocarboné". Do you know the invention better than what the patent describes? It could mean "containing at least carbon and hydrogen" while hydrocarbon excludes other elements.
