About bra ket notation
« on: April 29, 2017, 10:39:32 PM »
Hi. I read the books (Density functional theory of atoms and molecules) and find that it have a notation shown at the bottom of the image (a bar and a round bracket (not angle bracket). Anyone know what is that? Thankss.

Seems to me like there's a typo, basic ket should read basic set.  Possibly, advanced mathematics of the sort used for physical chemistry isn't my strong suit.  So maybe someone can confirm.

Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Thanks for your reply. I had the same thought initially, but later I found that this is used several times in the book, as shown in the image below.

Have you checked if there is no appendix on the notation used?

well, Eq. 2.1.27 says what it is. the |a1 a2 a3 ...) means a product of one-electron functions (i.e. orbitals).

Eq. 2.1.28 then uses the antisymmetrizer. apparently the |a1 a2 a3> is then the antisymmetrized wavefunction, also known as Slater determinant.

I never seen this notation but I guess it makes some kind of sense.
