Please help with organic synthesis homework
« on: November 22, 2017, 07:23:19 AM »
Hello Guys,

I'm reaching out since I can't figure out one problem in my organic synthesis class and google is of no help. I'm attaching a picture of a product I'm supposed to provide a synthesis reaction for.

The professor also hinted that one of substrates might me CH3NO2

Thanks for all your help in advance,
Filip from Warsaw University of Technology

Note: substrate is a Polish term, basically translates as a "reactant".

<off topic>I wonder why someone from Poland goes by the name of "dojczlander".</off topic>

@OP, What are your thoughts?  It is a forum rule (see red link above) that you must show your attempt first.

Problem is, I have absolutely no idea where to even get started, since I'm behind in the course.

This one is a little tricky but I think I see the answer.  I think the logical disconnections would be at the quarternary carbon.  Also, the C-N bond of the amide is another good one.  You will probably be making the ring on the right hand side during the synthesis.

I wonder why nitromethane? I just dont see it unless its triple alkylation of nitromethane? Is that even possible?

Maybe nitromethane in a triple Michael addition.
