Combustion of CH4
« on: April 10, 2018, 09:17:43 AM »
Hi all,
I am trying to answer this question:
If I combust 296,3865m3 of CH4, how much CO2 will I produce?

Thanks for the *delete me*

According to the forum rules, you must show your attempt before we can help you.  I suggest writing a balanced equation and working from that.

Ah thank you for that, apologies:

CH4+2O2=CO2 + 2H20
I have picked up from various sources that:
1m3 CH4 produces 2,75kg CO2, another that says 1,8 kg, another that says 2kg
I know that it will be different according to temperature and pressure, but I am taking an average of 2kg.
Theoretically then 296,3865m3 of CH4 will produce, by ratio should be 323.105m3.  Correct?

Why are you using sources, when the assignment is probably meant to test your knowledge of stoichiometry and volume and mole conversions?  Why would you mention temperature and pressue and then use an average?  Or is this not a high school level assignment?

How many moles is that volume of methane?

You get the same moles of CO2 out, what volume is that many moles?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I have picked up from various sources that: 1m3 CH4 produces 2,75kg CO2, another that says 1,8 kg, another that says 2kg [...] I am taking an average of 2kg.

To such a question, science knows one correct answer, and the others are wrong. An average is hence wrong.

And: a scientific decides by himself what is correct and what is wrong. You have found contradictory data, that's daily life, welcome to the club. Checking and discarding the wrong values (possibly all) is part of your job.

I know that it will be different according to temperature and pressure [...]

If your reaction equation is correct, why should the mass vary?

Enthalpy: I can't tell if Ellouise: is working from an Engineering point of view, in which case using the correct tables, to get the correct result is what's called for.

or

If Ellouise: is working from a beginner's chemistry point of view, in which case the Ideal Gas law, with its theoretical behavior and not the actual value is what's needed here.

I do know that Ellouise: hasn't logged in since April 10, 2018, 10:13:07 AM, so they may or may not have seen anything you or I have said. ;)
