Shipping a mole of tungsten
« on: April 23, 2018, 07:36:18 AM »
I'm trying to visualise how much space a mole of various elements would occupy. Have I got my Maths right? I figured:

A mole of tungsten: about 10cm cubed
A mole of iron: about 7cm cubed
A mole of carbon (graphite): about 5 cm cubed
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

Your values approx. correct. For carbon it depends, do you have diamonds or graphite.

A mole of tungsten: about 10cm cubed

I would be careful with how you express this as that could be taken to mean 10cm3 or a cube 10cm on each side.  The first is correct the later is 100 times too much

As was said, Beanyboy:, show us how you computed, and reference how you got the constants -- i.e. are you using the constants for amorphous carbon, graphite, or diamond.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

for other elements, use the popups on the second periodic table there.

My thanks to one and all. The inclusion of the link is much appreciated! As was the point about correctly visualising the physical dimensions of  10cm cubed.

Very much appreciated.
