Dear All,

      Fe has 26 electron,shell configuration is 2,8,14,2. The outer most shell has 2 valency electron ,so Fe 2+ . A well as Fe also have 3 valency electron by removing one paired electron from 3d6 and become 3d5, so already we have 2 electron in outermost shell now we received another one electron so now 3 electron in outermost shell , so Fe3+. My question is when 2 valency will exist and when 3 valency will exist,is their any condition? For example very Hot (approx 1000 deg c) Fe metal is (Ar)3d5, 4s3 and in normal ambient temperature Fe metal is (Ar)3d6,4s2 . Please confirm the same.

By writing a shell configuration like [Ar]3d54s3, you say implicitly that the atom is alone, which can happen as a gas.

Alternate shell configurations are observed normally when the atom is part of a molecule.

Fe 3+is more stable electronic configuration then Fe 2+ as it is exactly half filled.Even Fe2+ has very high tendency to get converted in Fe 3+.So presence of oxidizing agents or heat can favor Fe3+
