hydrolysis of methyl salicylate percent yield
« on: November 12, 2018, 01:01:06 PM »
Hello,

We did a reaction to synthesize salicylic acid from methyl salicylate and naoh. 0.033 mol of methyl salicylate was used and 50mL of 20% naoh. the mixture was refluxed and then recrystallized. the theoretical yield should be around 4.55g, and the experimental i got was 6.3g even after vacuum filtration and drying for 7 days. i am not too sure why my percent yield is above 100%, does that mean there are still impurities present?

most likely, does it look wet, is it a free flowing powder or was it clumpy?
