Reaction of phenol with neutral Ferric Chloride.
« on: July 30, 2006, 11:05:13 AM »

I want to ask a question:

why it is preferred to use neutral ferric chloride solution for detection of phenols? and why the stored solution of ferric chloride is acidic?.

                                                            Thanks

In storage FeCl3 may hydrolyze to FeOOH and othe oxohydroxydes or mixed Cl-hydrxydes and HCl released in solution which makes it acidic...
