Title: Server migration, changes to forum structure
Post by: Borek on April 01, 2012, 06:58:36 AM
As you probably don't know, in March server was hacked several times. To avoid further problems we will be moving the site to another server, with hopefully higher security level. It can mean some temporary interruptions to the forum operation. I will keep you posted about details.

We are not sure yet, but new server will be probably more expensive. That means to keep the forum running we need to generate more income. To do so, we plan to change the forum structure. We will combine all chemistry forums into one large forum, while splitting chemistry advertising into subforums - organic, inorganic, analytical and so on. At the same time chemistry advertising will be no longer free. Prices will be announced on Monday.

Wow.  I was noticing a slight slight slowdown, (when browsing the forums at the library, so I'm sure it wasn't my cheap-o connection,) but I didn't suspect there was a hacking problem.

It is not clear if the hacking had any effect on the forum performance, still, the way server was hacked meant everything could happen. As far as I can tell it was just a hack for an arts sake. But I can be missing something, I have just some superficial Linux knowledge.

Update: server migration will occur most likely tonight. It will mean forum will go into maintenance mode for several hours, I don't know yet when - but not later than 9 PM CST. Most likely earlier.

And I don't know how long it will take.

Update to update - it will be most likely even earlier, around 5:30 PM CST.

OK, forum was moved to a new server. If you see anything wrong, please let me know.

Note that things that were wrong before won't get miraculously better now. When I write "anything wrong" I mean things that were OK before but are wrong now ;)

The part about changes to the forum structure was slightly off, as you may expect on April 1st  :P

And you got me.  It was so subtle ... I couldn't tell at first.  Bravo.

Ironically, the clock seems off now?

Good point. I spotted it before, but forgot to report to the hosting company.

One large forum. Love that idea.
