« on: December 09, 2007, 07:16:54 PM »
hello everyone,
i am supposed to describe the following reaction: mixture of ethanol and isopropanol (dehydration). i tried to google it, but could not find any info  :-[
thats why i have no idea what the products would be  ??? so if anyone can help me, it would be really appreciated.
thank you in advance,

Dear AnG;

It depends very strong on the conditions and the reagent(s) of the reaction.
So it’s quite difficult to tell the main products!

Usually products are, but not lonely:
Di-Ethylether, unsymetric Ether, but less or no Di-Isopropyl-Ether (Why?), and some elimination products. Also “Esters” are possible, depending on the conditions.

I hope it gives you at least an Idea.

Good Luck!

thanks for the reply  :D
but i actually mentioned the reactants, its ethanol and isopropanol. so the reaction would look like that:
isopropanol + ethanol ->
and this is a dehydration type of reaction
yeah and what are the elimination products?

Dear AnG;

It seems you have forgotten that such a reaction needs reagent(s), otherwise it will not really work or only be some thermodynamic processes.

Dehydration of Alcohols, and both are, is normally Acid catalysed, and anyway thermodynamic controlled too. That means that the reaction conditions “decide” the partial amount of every possible product!

The usual additionally elimination products “are”:
   Ethylene and 1,1-Dimethyl-Ethylene.

But remember!:  All depends on the reaction conditions (Acid, Temperature, Concentration, etc.)

Good Luck!

THANKS A LOT!  :) and sorry for my dumbness  ::)
now i got the whole picture. so here are the 4 products i have:
Diisopropyl ether
Isopropyl ethyl ether
diethyl ether
water

but i need a total of five though  :-[ its probably an ester, not an elimination product. is it methyl-methanoate? or something else?

Dear AnG;

Sorry!, - But you did not read my posts correctly!

Di-Isopropyl-Ether will in nearly all cases not be a product, because steric hindrance!
All other are ok!

The Ethylene is built by Elimination from Ethanol intramolecular.
And 1,1-Dimethyl-Ethylene is built in the same way from Isopropanol.

Now you have really 5!

Good Luck!
