reacting with HCl or Sulphuric acid?
« on: June 01, 2006, 06:56:57 AM »
Hi,

Reaction 1:

Barium Sulphate + Hydrochloric acid -> Barium Chloride + Sulphuric Acid

Reaction 2:

Barium Chloride + Sulphuric Acid -> Barium Sulphate + Hydrochloric acid

--
How do i know which of the reaction is true, as both reaction may be able to react ???

Think about BaSO4 solubility.

it is insoluble, but what got to do with it?  :-\

the end product might give a ppt in reaction 2, and a clear solution in reaction 1..

No. The only reaction that takes place in your solution is BaSO4 precipitation. Once it precipitate, it will not magically dissolve just to reverse the reaction :)

(Although I must admit that it all depends on the level of your chemistry course, as situation is slightly more complicated. But better don't ask about details till you understand basics.)

I got a nice crystals of BaSO4 crystallization of small amounts of BaSO4 from hot conc. HNO3
