Ethanol and Butanol
« on: May 07, 2008, 09:37:27 AM »
Hey guys, without going into too much detail, i was just wondering why the boiling point of ethanol and butanol vary so much. It obviously has something to do with the addition of CH3 but i cant see what effect it could have. Maybe because the molecule is larger where some of the heat is absorbed by the additional molecule and as such, butanol has a higher boiling temperature?

Have you studied Van Der Waals forces yet?

If so, the answer lies there.
