Kinetics Lab Technique

I finished my lab and was asked the question: why was it necessary to kepp the total volume of the reagants after mixing constant in all the kinetic runs (why did you have to add dH20 in inverse proportion to the quantity of each solution)? this was the lab to find the order of a reaction by varying the number of drops.

I thought that you had to do this so that comparing the molarity and concentration would be accurate since adding the distilled water dilutes the concentration, changing the volume would change the time of the reaction or the concentration in different proportions.

I am kinda stuck on if this is the right idea or if there's more to it/ how to describe this idea.

Also, for doing this lab, what could be possible sources of error?
