I need some Thionyl chloride for a synthesis that I am performing, however, it is very expensive and even more difficult to obtain. Is there anyway to synthesize Thionyl chloride in a home laboratory?

Thionyl chloride is a dangerous compound since it releases bad gases and there are wasys to synthesis it, really depening on what lab supplies u have.

 what kind of synthesis are u preforming ?

Chlorination of a hydroxy group.

Just took a big test and don't feel like searching, but I know there have been discussions about it on sciencemadness.org.

Pretty sure the ones that work though are pretty involved with not some kind of not so easy to obtain phosphorus compound.

I wouldn't attempt to synthesize this in a home laboratory.  It's pretty nasty stuff, and without an appropriate fume hood could be dangerous.  If you're using it as a leaving group (the chloride), have you thought about converting to a mesylate instead?

I wouldn't really call this a "safe to do at home" type of synth

You could use phosporus oxychloride POCl3 either, but again, seriously toxic stuff.
