Chemical formula of pristane
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:17:37 PM »
If I were to write the chemical formula of pristane, would this be it?

CH3CHCH3(CH2)3CHCH3(CH2)3CHCH3(CH2)3CH(CH3)CH3

How would I differentiate the methyl groups on the terminal side?
(CH3)CH3?
CH3CH3?
(CH3)2?

I would use the last option of:  (CH3)2. So for me, the whole thing would be:

(CH3)2CH(CH2)3CH(CH3)(CH2)3CH(CH3)(CH2)3CH(CH3)2.

You could try and condense it more also to:

(CH3)2CH(CH2)3(CH(CH3)(CH2)3)2)CH(CH3)2

(CH3)2CH(CH2)3(CH(CH3)(CH2)3)2)CH(CH3)2

() doesn't match.

Crap.  I meant:

(CH3)2CH(CH2)3(CH(CH3)(CH2)3)2CH(CH3)2
