Title: Where to Buy a Safety Shield
Post by: Mitch on April 07, 2009, 07:09:19 PM
Yes, I know I can google this. It didn't turn up any vendors I recognized. Suggestions? I'm going to be using sodium tert-butoxide and as we don't have any vertical sashes on the fume hood I want an extra layer of protection between me and the reaction.

Personally I've only ever used standard PPE (gloves, googles, lab coat) with NaOtBu without problems. If you were really worried you could go with a full face shield, leaving you with no exposed skin. I presume you're worried about the corrosive nature of NaOtBu as opposed to what's going on in the reaction itself?

Have you tried Sigma-Aldrich?  Item #Z231363.  Or just search S-A for "safety shield" and get a whole whack of them :).  VWR and Fisher also carry them.

kiwi: I've only used potassium t-BuLi before is sodium t-BuLi that different?
gfunk: Thanks, I'm checking them out now.

tBuLi or tBuOM (where M is a metal)?

Depends on the chemistry you're doing, but for most things there is probably little difference between the sodium and potassium salts.

sjb: I didn't think there was, thanks.
