phenol test with ferric chloride

I know the solution is supposed to turn purple, but it became kinda grey/brown, I can´t find an explanation anywhere...can anyone help me?

iron(III) oxide is rust and brown-ish. Perhaps there is a redox with oxygen in the air, especially after leaving the mixture to stand in air for some time.
