Experiment with peas
« on: December 14, 2007, 05:30:08 AM »
Hi there!

I was asked to do the following experiment:

Cover the bottom of a bottle with yellow peas. Pour water into the bottle so that it covers the peas. Close the bottle and let it stand for a couple of days. Light a candle and put it down into the bottle.

What happens is that the candle light is being put out, but I don't see what the peas have to do with this? Do they bind the oxygen? What is the chemical reaction?

Help apprecitated!

It shows that there was respiration going on.  The oxygen was used up.
