Title: How to Determining the structure of compounds A and B
Post by: watchserials on June 19, 2014, 03:12:28 AM
In collage when i try to compound A (C8H12) was treated with excess hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst, the only product obtained was compound B (C8H16).  Treatment of compound A with ozone followed by zinc and acetic acid gave a 1:1 mixture of the two compounds shown below.  Determine the structres of compounds A and B, taking care to show all reasoning.

H3C-C(=O)-CH2-CH2-C(=O)-CH3          and         CH(=O)-CH(=O)

the oxygens are double bonds off of the top of the carbons

please help this question is beyond me i cant find anything in my text books

What is your attempt.  So far for what is Ozone used in organic chemistry. Ozonolysis called.
