ICP-MS plasma instability
« on: January 08, 2024, 02:35:14 AM »
Hi everyone, I am facing a problem on plasma stability in Thermo X series 2 ICP-MS, the plasma is igniting properly but once it reaches "pumping out expansion champer" it is getting turned off.  The sample and skimmer cones are fixed properly and also  graphite gasket was changed.  Kindly give me some suggestions

I suggest calling thermo. They are usually pretty good at troubleshooting hardware faults like this. Plasma fail could be a lot of things, bad/old coil, gas insufficiency, reduction in ventilation flow, something dirty. Newer instruments have so many interlocks that shut the plasma off, and error messages aren't always easy to decipher. The plasma on our ICP-OES kept failing to light recently and it was because the ventilation draw wasn't high enough; we had to install a new fan.
