Hardness of water

 can anyone explain in detail all about the hardness of water without using technical jargon and making it really easy to understand...thankyou very much  :Confuzzled :

hard water is hard because it precipitates. The white chalky deposits it leaves can cause problems such as reducing the effectiveness of our washing powder for clothes, and it clogs the pipes and taps.

lemonoman:
Most of the 'precipitates' that occur are substances containing calcium or magnesium.  CLR, the "Calcium Lime Rust" washing solution that unclogs shower heads and coffee pots from 'hard water stains' get rid of these.
