help???need a simple expl.

  i have a question about soft and hard water.....I know that soap will not lather up easily in hard water,but any explanation why ???
it's my first time here,so be nice to me.... :)

It depends on the concentration of Ca2+ and Mg2+.

The Ca2+ and Mg2+ salts of long chains fatty acids (soap) are not soluble in water, so they can´t form foam.

Hard water contains a greater quantity of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. The reaction of the earth alkali ions with soap produces precipates
