Calcuim Sulfate...
« on: December 20, 2005, 09:11:28 PM »
I am trying to make my own plaster of paris, i know it calls for gypsum, but i would like to react two compounds to create the main ingredient Calcium Sulfate.

My question is this:  What compounds can I react together to get CaSO4?

You can take any soluble calcium salt (chloride, nitrate) and soluble sulfate eg. sodium, potassium, ammonium, iron, aluminium, an so on) and mixt them.
Calcium sulfate exist in nature as gipsum, anhydrite and and alabaster.

Hint: You can precipitate Calcium sulfate only if you have a concentrated Ca2+-Solution.If you have olny diluited solutions, you can precipitate the Calcium sulfate by adding Ethanol.
