hi i have a presentation on halogens tomorrow but i cant seem to find any informantion on making connections to the modern day world. so can someone give me some examples of modern day use of single displacement halogens? thanks

My only recommendation is to start your projects earlier.

But I'd love to make a couple suggestions:

- Illegal Drug-Making
lots of so called 'precursors' - the chemicals one uses to make illegal drugs - are organic halides!  Check 'em out: http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/policies/illicit_drug_precursor_schedule

- Bombmaking
No details included here...it's not cool to make bombs.  But chlorides are popular for that.

And possibly the most important:
- Killing stuff
Insects, plants, rodents, molluscs, or birds!  You want it dead, there's a halogenated chemical that will do the job for you.  Check out some examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avicide
