Title: Reaction between Tio2 and KMno4
Post by: mouli23 on December 10, 2009, 09:12:32 AM
Hi,

I just want to know If any reaction happens when TiO2 is fused with Potassium hydrogen sulphate.
What is the reaction between TiO2, KMnO4 and ferric ammonium sulphate in acidic solution.
The main reason is we do titrations with KMnO4 for checking the purity of TiO2 in Ferric ammonium Solution.

Please Help me with these reactions.

Give more details and show your attempt
Purity of TiO2 is determined by a reduction Ti(IV) to Ti(III) followed by a redox titration with Fe(III)

In the method we have we need to fuse the Tio2 with pottasium hydrogen sulphate and then it was run through zn(amalgam) reductor. which has to be collected in a ferric ammonium sulphate solution and then titrated against kmno4.

Chemistry behind is that described by AWK.

Not idea what role Fe2+ plays here. For sure it will get oxidized during titration as well.

Hi,

I just want to know If any reaction happens when TiO2 is fused with Potassium hydrogen sulphate.
2KHSO4 + heat (lower temperature) --> K2S2O7 + H2O
H2O leaves the crucible as vapour.

K2S2O7 + heat (higher temperature, some minutes after the first reaction) --> K2SO4 + SO3

SO3 + TiO2 (high temperatures) --> TiOSO4

The last compound is soluble and you can recuce it with Zn.

Fusing with KHSO4 is used for solubility of TiO2. Reduction of soluble Ti(IV) compound gives Ti(III). Reaction with ferric ammonium solution (Fe(III) alum) oxidizes Ti(III) to
Ti(IV) with reduction Fe(III) to Fe(II). Finally titration Fe(II) with KMnO4 gives you amount of reduced Fe and from this result you can calculate content of TiO2.

Hi all

Thanks,

I think I got what I wanted.

Now I could derive the equations from the explanation given.
