Problem linking to forum from Google search
« on: January 01, 2009, 07:42:52 AM »
Hi,

   This probably isn't the right place to write this - but I can't find the right board.

   Anyway ...

   When I search for "chemistry forum" in Google, this site comes up top of the list. Everything looks fine on the Google entry summary info. However, 50% of the time when I click on the link google provides I am taken either to a pornography site or a site masquerading as an AntiVirus site running what looks like an online "security scan" - it is probably trying to deliver a virus to my PC. The only way to get rid of these is to crash IE. The other 50% of the time the Google link brings me to this site. I would rather not get the pornography or the bogus anti-virus sites. Is there something I am doing wrong causing my browser to navigate to this other stuff?

My best guess is it's your system, 'tho I could be wrong.  This sounds like you have something on your system "editorializing" your Google searches.  This may in fact, be Google itself.  There's lots of tips people can give you, starting with my favorite -- don't use internet explorer.  But I'll leave that tip, and others to you to find.  Here's another tip -- what happens if you search for "cliverlong" "chemistry" ?  Do you get this site every time?  When I search for "Arkcon" "-property" (I need that because Arkcon is, apparently, a common Scandinavian name) I always get this forum, as well as WoW, and other MoO guilds, and other places that may, (or may not) be my posts.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Dear Arkcon;

In this case, why not be surprised on:  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww.chemicalforums.com++Arkcon&btnG=Search  ;)

Happy New Year!
Good Luck!

Oh yeah, you can limit it, or for the truly unadventurous, just bookmark the forum.  But is its fun to "ego surf", that is, to Google search your own name, or favorite online handles, and see what you've posted, and what about you Google chooses to index.  Looking at my old resumes, I found my old handle -- Arkon@ibm.net, and that was a funny search, I was such a noob, back then.

And to you, and yours.  Now, while my roast cooks, I'm off to Google everyone on this forum's names.  Gawd almighty, I hope I don't find pr0n.  Because that would be an ugly image to have in my head when I next read someone's posts.

*[EDIT]*

Oh wow, does Borek: know he's a Turkish pastry made from phyllo dough?  :o

Try AdAware Free and AVG free. AVG is an anti-virus, and AdWare is an Anti-Spyware/AdAware program. Both free and nice.

AdAware Free
http://www.lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php

AVG Free
http://free.avg.com/

Just install them, update them. Then run them (one at a time). Do the full scans. It will take at least 30 minutes for each one....so go read your chemistry book while it is doing it!

Dear Arkcon;

(Thank you! – Of course also for all.)

I used it only to show you the most effective search eng. on the Forums, that’s possibly jet.
(Much more effective then “header search” or the “internal search” at all.)

Good Luck!
