Silicon and hydrochloride
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:45:06 AM »
Si + 4HCl -> SiCl4 + 2H2
(HCl is in solution form)

My question is if this reaction is possible. I know that hydrochloride is an acid which reacts with metals up to H2, but I'm confused because of silicon. I found a lot of reactions with silicon that were quite extraordinary but I couldn't find the one like above.

No.  Silicon isn't attacked by most mineral acid solutions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon#Chemical  Silicon does react with free chlorine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_tetrachloride
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
