Title: Assignment Help - Organic Chemistry
Post by: Esq on March 28, 2024, 06:07:25 PM
Can someone please help me with the remaining questions and let me know if I've done them correctly or what I did wrong? Thank you!!

Are your blanks intended to mean “none” or are you just not suggesting answers for them?

I wasn't sure about the ones I left blank. Sorry, I should have clarified better

OK you've done some work on this but there are gaps. Not sure if these are gaps in your understanding of the chemistry or ability to read a skeleton structure. (ii), (iii),(v) and (vii) are correct. The others need more work. It can help some students to write-out the full displayed structure to be sure what is attached to what. Then it's just a matter of being careful with your counting. Do you really know what a 3° carbon is and also a chiral carbon? If not Wikipedia or your textbook need consulting.

I've been trying to teach myself and have been struggling with this particular chapter. I do know what chiral centres are, however, I have a hard time picking them out in line structures. Would (e) have a chiral centre? Since it is attached to a methyl group, an ethyl group, a Hydrogen, and the part of the carboxylic acid. I have reviewed some more resources and have altered a few of my answers. I highlighted my alterations in blue. If able, please let me know if I'm correct in my thinking or if I'm wrong. Thank you, I truly appreciate your help

(iv) what alcohol is C made from? Is it a branched chain alcohol?
(vi) Are those carbons that you've labelled secondary in D and E actually secondary? What is the difference, for example, between the isopropyl group in D and the one in C?

(iv) C is made from an isopropyl alcohol. So, it wouldn't be branched alcohol since the 3 carbons would be the longest chain and the OH group would act as a substituent? Correct?

(vi) D and E would be 3° carbon! I realize my mistake, I wasn't including the C attached to the double-bonded O.

Thank you!! I understand this concept more clearly now!
