Silver nitrate in dessicator bag
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:13:46 AM »
In an attempt to purify synthesized Silver nitrate I have re-dissolved it in De-ionized water.  Though in order to speed up the evaporation I was wondering whether Sodium Hydroxide in a dessicator bag with the silver nitrate  would have any adverse effects?  I usually use the NaOH for absorbing acidic gases and water from various things but not sure about such a precious product where I can not afford to lose anything.  Thankyou.

Why not mild heat?

Yes I know but I guess I am reluctant to involve heat when it coms to silver nitrate because of the ease with which it decomposes and since I could not find the temperature at which it decomposes I relied on some vague distant memory notion that it was just 60/70c.

Do you have a wet solid sample that you want to dry? Or a liquid solution you want to evaporate H2O out of?

Could you apply a vacuum?

Wet solid sample would evaporate easily, I would never heat that.  No, I have about 75mLs water to evaporate.  I decided to go ahead anyway, it's on a hotplate.   No access to a vacuum I'm afraid.  I know they are handy for some things I do.

Be careful. I think AgNO3 has been known to detonate in certain conditions. EtOH being one.

Yes I know, but thought that was only in direct contact.  anyway, decided to use the slow boat method -  I'll leave it to evaporate naturally.
