Title: Lab Safety Question?

I can't figure out the answer to these..

1) How long should you try to light a Bunsen burner before turning the gas off?

2) The phrase, "Dilution is the Solution" applies to what?

i think the second one means that if you spilled something, you should dilute it if you're not sure if it's a base or acid because then it won't be as concetrated.

The answer to the first question in most labs has become "You shouldn't try to light a bunsen burner - never use an open flame in a lab"

Very  much - THIS.  Your text book or class notes may have the correct answer for you.  Many professionals haven't used a bunsen burner in years, we have more specialized heating instruments -- for example: a steam bath is used when handling organic solvents.  Bunesn burners may vary from type, model and age, there's no generic answer.
