I put a google ad at the top of the forum.

I'm testing it out to see how it does, sorry for the inconvenience. I'll remove it in a week depending on the test and user feedback.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

I prefer the chemistry book ads. It reflects the forum as a chemical-focused web site.

The google ads look tacky. In fact, you won't realise they are chemical-related until you read it.

I agree with geodome.

I agree, I also used to look at the featured books when I was bored.

Is there a way of making the User Info box thinner (or/and moving it more to the left) and squashing the Google ads to the right and putting the Featured books in between?

Shhh! Don't let the advertisers know!
Anyway, I thought the ionic liquids (one of the advertisements) looked quite cool- I didn't even know they existed before then. :o
Personally, the google ads don't bother me that much, but I also miss the featured books.

That would be a bit too much in my opinion. I think that the box of the featured books is enough :)

I have a suggestion:
1. put the amazon book ad at the current google ad position.
2. move the google ad to just below the shoutbox OR
3. put the google ad just above the chemicalforum.com menu in the same left column OR
4. put the google ad between the menu and the shoutbox.
