nuclear chemistry and making gold
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:32:35 AM »
I had a really random/stupid question which if i ask my teachers then they would think i am stupid.

anyways, here it is, if we can use nuclear fusion/fission to make new elements from another element by adding electrion or alpha, beta, and gamma particles.. cant we make GOLD. using this??

i am pretty sure the answer is NO, but i dont know why.

thanks

check this out: http://www.sciforums.com/Can-you-make-gold-in-a-nuclear-reactor-t-57164.html (last post)

Basically fission is preferred over fusion in gold since it has a bigger nuclei than Fe, hence splitting of heavier nucleus to gold is more stable.
No matters what results are waiting for us, it's nothing but the DESTINY!!!!!!!!!!!!

wowww, i did not understand that man's last post.

i only understood that it is possible to make "fake" gold using partical accelerator. or something like that.

when you say taht fission is preferred over fusion, does that mean we can actually make gold?

Yes it is possible to make gold.

Nuclear reactions can create any known element. Of course anyone expecting to make a profit making gold from other elements would be very disappointed.

It would not be fake. It is called artificial gold.
The man's post says that the only stable isotope of gold is 197. Natural gold is pure Au-197
