the reaction that I don't understand
« on: September 28, 2007, 10:41:54 AM »
A book when representing how to identify Cl- says "add silver nitrate solution" (-> to form precipitate) and then add nitric acid, later followed by ammonium hydroxide. They say what next is that "precipitate will not be dissolved in HNO3, but it will dissolve in NH4OH.
I wonder what actually happens in the solution ?
I guess, NH4OH (if exists) will prioritize to react with acid, so only a small amout of it react with silver nitrate (I'm even not sure if this reaction can occur). So we cannot see the precipitate is remarkably dissolved.

Adding HNO3 to AgCl is for test - most silver salts are soluble in HNO3.
Then to test furter we try to dissolve AgCl in an excess of ammonia - a compnlex [Ag(NH3)2]Cl is soluble in water, and white precipitate disappers.
