Cl2 is a strong oxidizing agent-what do you think that could happen with the iodide (I-) ion? :)

Try to smell it CAREFULLY

...maybe it is copper nitrate hydrate ( Cu(NO3)2 * x H2O )...maybe the product is anhydrous copper nitrate.

I would smell it CAREFULLY, but I don't have any at hand is there any science website that might have information of the odour of it?

It smells like a pool since that's what they use to clean the water in it. Can't really think of an adjective to describe it though.

From this forum --
Search MSDS: Cornell University
Using --
chlorine
Got this link --
http://msds.ehs.cornell.edu/msds/msdsdod/a98/m48697.htm
With this information --
Appearance and Odor: GAS: GREENISH YELLOW; LIQUID: AMBER. ODOR: PUNGENT

I do not think I would suggest doing a smell test, but I do not know what they teach now days.

I think what you smell at the swimming pool are chloramines and not free chlorine gas. :)

There will be some chlorine gas odor present too as the chlorine compounds used in pool "chlorine" is typically sodium or calcium hypochlorite, and the hypochlorite ion generally tends to decompose into free chlorine gas.  You don't need a helluva lot of chlorine gas to be able to smell it.
