Hi,
I need help with the nomenclature of a certain ester.
There is C=OOCCC on both sides of the molecule and there are five carbons in between.
How do I name this thing? Or could someone please direct me to where I can find out?
I know how to name esters with only one C=OOR side.
Thank you

Like this? One way would be to name the diol, then the acyl groups

Thank you for your help. We haven't done diol and or acyl groups in class as yet. I will look them up. Thank you again for your help.

Hi SJB,
I just noticed the O's are on the other side, going outwards.
I searched the groups you suggested. I tried a few ways to name the molecule, 1,5-propylpentanoatediol, propylpentanoate-1,5-diol but I don't think they are right. Any suggestions? Am I on the right track?

No you can't interchange the O-side and the C-side of the alkyl alkanoate.
In methyl propanate for example:
Methyl stands for and propanate for and combined they form methyl propanoate .
How would you name and how would you name
If you know how to name those two, I think you can also name your compound.

Hi Critzz,
Thank you for trying to help. I know how to name the compounds you have for the pictures for above.
What I wanted to know was how do you name an ester that has two esters on either side of the compound, where in the name you put the alcohol and the acid. I wish I knew how to post a picture so you can see what I am looking at.
Thank you again. I will ask my teacher when I see him next time.

Well, you used SMILES (or something similar) in your post, and that's exactly how you post a picture of a molecule here: http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=59314.0

Oh, I assumed it was the structure sjb posted earlier.

So like this?
I'd try naming the acid first.
