If your wafer is robust enough, would it be possible to use a very strong, coloured oxidant? This would give a colour change proportional to the amount of oxidant remaining, as it oxidised H2 to 2H+.

Unfortunately, I dont know any particular oxidants that have the sufficient over-potential to oxidise H2.
