Electrons in an excited state
« on: November 02, 2009, 09:07:00 PM »
Using arrow notation draw an excited electronic state of N+ which has two unpaired electrons.

How do I draw an excited state for this ion? I drew full 1s and 2s orbitals and two half filled 2p orbitals with the arrows pointing in the same direction. If the arrows are pointing in different directions (that is the spin of the electrons in their separate orbitals are not in the same direction). Does this constitute an excited state?

That's what I would have done too. I'm rusty on this stuff though.
