SURFACTANT EXTRACTION
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:29:27 AM »
How am I going to extract the surfactant in emulsion resin?  There is an ASTM method on how to do it.  First you have to put water then dry the sample.  Put again water.  Dry in a low temp hotplate for 1 hour.  Decant the water.  I filter the water but nothing was left in the filter paper.  Am I doing the right thing? If not, how? please help.... Thanks.

Perhaps you could share the ASTM #?

I would have thought that the surfactant would be suspended in the water in the form of micelles. You won't be able to filter them out.

Distillation maybe?

First possibility :
You can try in highly aqueous diluted condition.
Then you centrifugate to settle down the polymer
Then you take the aqueous part and dry it

Second possibility :
Extraction with an organic solvent on dried matter

first you need to dilute the emulsion resin then dry in the oven to remove the water.  Then put again water and heat on a hotplate for 1 hour, leaching, I guess.. Then the clear part, it said that, i need to filter the clear water to identify the emulsifier by ftir....
